The appalling case in Kondhwa, India, emerged after the alleged victim complained of stomach pains
An eight-year-old girl was raped for months by a gang of boys including one aged just six, police in India said.
The appalling case in Kondhwa emerged after the alleged victim complained of stomach pains and was taken to the doctor by her father.
After an examination, the medic told the girl’s parents it appeared she had been raped.
Senior inspector Milind Gaikwad told the Times of India she girl was then interviewed sensitively by woman officers.
“The girl revealed that the five boys would take her to a neighbouring apartment as well as to other sections of the building, including the terrace, and force themselves on her,” Inspector Gaikwad said.
An 18-year-old and four minors aged 12, 10, nine and six-years-old have been arrested.
“She said the 18-year-old first came to her house five months ago and took her away on the promise of giving her sweets,” said Inspector Gaikwad.
“He was joined by the other four and they took turns in raping her.”
The rape crisis in India first came into sharp focus with the rape and murder of a 23-year-old on a bus in Delhi in 2015.
It sparked huge protests and demands for more to be done about sexual violence towards women.
But two years later, crime statistics continue to make grim reading.
A woman is raped every 15 minutes in India with more than 34,600 reported in 2015.
